Hyper Light Breaker

Heart Machine's early access title, Hyper Light Breaker, set in the Hyper Light Drifter universe, has received mixed initial reviews. However, looking beyond Steam reviews reveals a promising co-op experience. While solo play can be frustrating due to overwhelming enemy spawns and a shrinking map, the game shines with teammates. The current lack of clear direction is a significant hurdle, though the developers plan to address this.

The core gameplay loop involves collecting prisms to fight three main bosses before facing the final Abyss King (currently unavailable). Players have limited lives per run but can revive teammates. Extraction is possible at any time. Combat, initially simple, gains depth with upgrades and special attacks. Strategic use of dashes and hoverboards is crucial, and healing is scarce.

Despite needing more polish, including the final boss, better matchmaking, and an onboarding process, Hyper Light Breaker offers entertaining combat and engaging traversal. The developers have already addressed early feedback with updates. For its current price and the bonus of a free Hyper Light Drifter copy, it's a worthwhile early access venture, especially for those who appreciate evolving games and co-op challenges.
